 Air Enema Intussusception

An air enema uses only air to see the lower intestine through X-ray. The enema shows if there is an intussusception, a condition where the intestine telescopes into itself and causes a blockage in the bowel. If an intussusception is discovered, the air enema can also be used to attempt to rectify the problem.

Preparation for the Exam
No preparation is necessary. This exam can only be done after the child has been admitted to the emergency room.

During the Exam

Parents are often allowed to stay in the X-ray room during the test. A pediatric technologist will discuss the procedure with children who are old enough to communicate. Age-appropriate language will be used to explain the exam.

Your child will be changed into a gown and then will lie on the fluoroscopy table. A small tube will be placed in the rectum. Air will then be placed through the tube into the colon. Your child will then be rolled in different positions while the images are being obtained.

The enema can be uncomfortable because it makes the colon feel full, and your child may feel cramping. However, the sensation passes quickly.

If an intussusception is seen, the radiologist may try to relieve it by inserting more air into the intestines with a small amount of pressure. This exam can take from 15 minutes to an hour or longer.

After the Exam
Your child will pass the air for a few hours.
