Hospitals can be scary for kids of all ages. We know that children respond better to treatment in a comforting and soothing environment. That’s why we provide programs to address their unique needs. Our certified Child Life Specialists help patients and their families adjust to the hospital setting. Whether it’s explaining medical procedures to a child or encouraging siblings to decorate a hospital room to feel more like home, our Child Life team is here to help keep life as ordinary as possible.
In collaboration with parents and healthcare professionals, our Child Life Specialists incorporate play materials and actual medical equipment to help children understand what to expect when they undergo surgery and medical procedures. The Child Life team works to help continue normal growth and development not only when your child is in the hospital but also when he or she gets back home.
Playing can also be an important part of healing, so Child Life experts coordinate our playrooms and teen rooms to provide a break from the hospital routine. These rooms are fun-only zones, a safe haven from medical procedures and the stress of being sick. Playrooms stocked with games and toys provide planned activities and free playtime. Teen rooms offer pool tables, foosball, computers, music and video games to give older kids a place to relax. All children can also experience the soothing effects of pet therapy with weekly visits by lovable dogs.
In addition, Child Life Services tends to the needs of each child’s family through educational and support services. Whether it’s helping a sibling understand a brother’s or sister’s illness or involving parents in child development programs, our Child Life Specialists do everything possible to help your entire family deal with an otherwise difficult situation. |
