With Addition of New Physicians, Medical City Children's Hospital Craniofacial Center Becomes Largest in the Country

Medical City Children's Hospital today announced its newly expanded craniofacial center, which offers an August_12__2010_PR_Inset.jpgarray of craniofacial services available from world-renowned surgeons with a combined 145 years of experience.

Five new physicians join Medical City Children's Hospital's Dr. Carlos Barcelo, Dr. Jeffrey Fearon and Dr. David Genecov to bring the surgical staff of the craniofacial center to eight.  Dr. Jay Burns, Dr. John Burns, Dr. Steve Byrd, Dr. Richard Ha and Dr. P. Craig Hobar joined the team August 2, 2010.  In addition to the five new physicians, Medical City now has two craniofacial orthodontists on staff: Dr. Deji Fashemo, DDS and Dr. Young Jong Park, DDS.

Top-Tier Craniofacial Expertise

  • Dr. Jay Burns is currently an assistant professor of plastic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and has a private practice at Baylor University Medical Center of Dallas.  He is also a noted national and international speaker and authority on laser and cosmetic surgery.  Dr. Burns' specialty is vascular anomalies.
  • Dr. John Burns is a clinical instructor of plastic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and is in private practice with a renowned group of plastic surgeons at The Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute.  Dr. Burns was raised in Dallas and graduated from Highland Park High School.  He was the first plastic surgeon in the United States to complete a fellowship in laser surgery.  His specialty is vascular anomalies.
  • Dr. Steve Byrd is a clinical professor of plastic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.  He was awarded the prestigious - James Barrett Brown Award of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.  Dr. Byrd's specialties include: cleft lip/cleft palate, nasal deformities and ear reconstructions.
  • Dr. Richard Y. Ha is a pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgeon who specializes in surgery for cleft lips and palate, congenital ear deformities (microbial), facial paralysis (facial reanimation), craniosynostosis and craniofacial disorders, birthmarks, microsurgery, congenital breast deformities and facial trauma.  Dr. Ha also performs adult reconstructive and cosmetic procedures through his practice at Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute.  Utilizing his special training in cleft lip/palate and craniofacial surgery, Dr. Ha has participated in surgical missions with the LEAP foundation, providing care to underprivileged children in the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
  • Dr. P. Craig Hobar is the founder of the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute, a team of six surgeons dedicated to the advancement of plastic and reconstructive surgery.  He also trains residents at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in plastic and reconstructive surgery and is the Director of Craniofacial Fellowship Program at the medical school.  Dr. Hobar is also the founder of LEAP.  At Medical City Children's Hospital of Dallas, Dr. Hobar is Head of Craniofacial Surgery.  Through his practice, Dr. Hobar has brought many innovations to the care of children with cleft and craniofacial deformities.  These include: pre-surgical orthopedics in clefts, helmet molding or asymmetrical heads, bone expansion and the use of hydroxyapatite as a bone substitute.

The Medical City Children's Hospital team, which includes a full range of medical specialists involved in craniofacial care, has performed more than 15,000 surgical procedures.  More than 200,000 patients from more than 75 countries have been treated by Medical City Children's Hospital Craniofacial Center specialists, making it on the of the largest craniofacial centers in the country.
