Milestones

• Medical City was founded in 1974 as a 367-bed hospital.
• Medical City Children’s Hospital opened in 1996—a hospital within a hospital offering world-class pediatric care.
• The Transplant Center was founded in 1991.
• The Heart Transplant program is recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services as one of the top heart transplant programs in the country.
• In 2002, the Medical City Transplant program was awarded United Resource Network (URN) Client Choice Awards for excellence in patient care and administrative ease, communications and lodging assistance.
• The Cardiovascular Institute was founded in 2000.
• Medical City was awarded The Joint Commission highest honors in 1991, 1995, 1998 and 2001.
• Medical City became the first hospital to fully sponsor a Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity home in 2003.
• The Dallas Business Journal named Medical City to the top ten “Best Places to Work” list in 2003.
• Medical City was awarded Magnet recognition in December 2003 by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for excellence in nursing care. Of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide, Medical City was the 94th in the nation, the ninth in the state and the first in North Texas to earn this recognition. Re-designation was achieved in April 2008, which makes Medical City the first in North Texas to earn Magnet recognition twice.
• The Dallas Business Journal named Medical City to the top ten “Best Places to Work” list in 2004; ranked #1 among the 10 finalists.

Innovations

• Medical City Children’s Hospital is a National Center for Coordinating Pediatric Nephrology Studies.
• Medical City Children’s Hospital is the only nonuniversity-affiliated hospital for the Pediatric Oncology Group (studies on rare tumors).
• Medical City Children’s Hospital has one of the top craniofacial programs in the world; more than 15,000 procedures have been performed on children and adults from every state and 75 countries.
• The Craniofacial Center worked with KLS Martin to develop a device designed to treat Crouzon Syndrome by slowly moving the bones in the face forward into the normal position.
• Medical City Women's Services specialize in high-risk pregnancies and deliveries.
• The Heart Transplant Program is one of the busiest and most successful such programs in North Texas.
• Medical City is the only hospital in North Texas to offer adult and pediatric stem cell transplantation.
• Medical City was the first hospital in the southwest United States to perform open heart bypass surgery using robotic technology.
• Medical City hosted the first worldwide live Internet broadcast of a beating heart surgery with opportunities for audience participation.
• Medical City is the only hospital in North Texas to offer 24/7 onsite childcare for employees through the Children’s Choice Learning Centers.
• The Emergency Services Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is recognized by the National Health Care Advisory Board as Best Practice for Observation Medicine.
